<image:caption>Adrienne Bennett's path of becoming the first African American female master plumber in the United States exemplifies tenacity and perseverance. Bennett was born in Chicago and raised in Detroit in the 1960s, where she initially studied metallurgical engineering at Lawrence Technological University. Her path shifted in 1976 when she attended a political event and met a recruiter from the Mechanical Contractors Association of Detroit, who piqued her interest in plumbing. Bennett advanced from apprentice to journeyman plumber, eventually getting her master plumber license. She was employed by the city of Detroit as a plumbing inspector and code enforcement officer due to her abilities. Bennett played a key part in Detroit's rehabilitation efforts in 2008 by founding Benkari LLC, a contracting firm that specializes in green building solutions. In addition to breaking down barriers, her efforts have made sure that many buildings now have safe and effective plumbing systems.</image:caption>

Without laborers, architecture would remain the imagination of the architect. The laborers use their craft to bring the creativity of the architect to life. Throughout history, Black laborers, inventors, and builders have made significant contributions to defining the built environment. Their work has had a long-lasting influence on architecture, from inventing construction methods to transforming vital housing systems. Adrienne Bennett, Moses McKissack, Alice Parker, and John P. Most choose their family, pets or a celebrity they look up to. All the students put their houses together to form a neighborhood. If time permits, we add in community building and spaces like parks and grocery stores. On the final day, we have a neighborhood reveal where the students present their project to an audience of parents. This program is created for school age children, but it’s so fun that parents dive in on design too. The children design a clubhouse for their favorite cartoon, super hero or storybook character through modelmaking. We start off reading the book, Jamila Pearl The Architect Girl, to ignite imagination. Then the children eagerly design and build a special place for their client. We’ve had clubhouses for a dinosaur, Miles Morales, Wonder Woman, Super Girl, Poison Ivy, and more. These workshops are free to children, and registering is easy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s May! Flowers are blooming, the weather is warming up and it's also National Mental Health Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to reducing the stigma and sharing resources and tips. We are going to do the same by focusing on mental health in architecture. Mental health is extremely important and impacts how a person thinks, feels, interacts, and navigates life. The profession of architecture has a significant impact on the mental health of those who are pursuing and practicing within the industry. Unfortunately, mental health challenges in the field of architecture are rarely discussed, because the culture is typically a fast-paced competition that passively dismisses self-care. Many have felt guilty about taking time for themselves because they believe they will be seen as someone who isn’t dedicated. This can make it difficult for architects and designers to openly discuss their mental health. Another unfortunate reality is that the culture of working long days into the night, and begins during the pursuit of architecture during architecture school.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Architecture school is a rigorous journey that teaches students how to think creatively to solve spatial problems. It is also an intense transition from high school into post-secondary education. Students are endowed with an enormous amount of responsibility only a few months after completing the twelfth grade. The first year of architecture school can present itself as an internal competition amongst all the other students that can add to the impact of mental health. There are external challenges like tuition, books, supplies, and philosophical challenges such as belonging and safety. The pressures are so high, that some students decide to leave their desire of pursuing architecture and establish a new path in an adjacent or unrelated degree program.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There are many firms that are implementing mental health strategies because taking care of the people who work for the firm will benefit the business. If your employer provides an Employee Assistance Program for therapy sessions, take advantage of those resources if you need to seek a professional for mental health. It is confidential and prevents you from suffering in silence. You can also request human resources to provide mental health workshops or lunch-and-learns to start the conversations and remove the stigma of mental health. Prioritize your self-care by establishing boundaries to prevent burnout and enhance your productivity. The path to nurturing mental health in architecture requires a collective effort from individuals, educational institutions, firm leadership, and professional organizations. By shedding light on the challenges and promoting open dialogue, we can work together to create a profession that designs for and WITH consideration for the well-being of others.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When a new graduate enters the practice of architecture, they may have the same awakening they experienced at the start of architecture school. There is the pressure to secure an internship, and once you land a position, you realize you are not doing anything close to what you thought you would be doing. You made sure your portfolio was perfect only to discover that as an intern some of your time is spent working on door and frame elevations, answering phones, and refilling the plotter and printer with ink and paper. That can be frustrating. The young professional that has worked for a few years, and has been promoted to the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Coordinator, may feel a little burned out because they are still not designing buildings the way they thought they would in college. They are also studying tirelessly to complete each division of the Architecture Registration Exam, and a failed test can be devastating.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Students have to take care of themselves, and that could include diet and exercise as well as hobbies and social interaction. Self-care is not a blanket approach, and students will have to determine the best strategies for their mental health. If there are counseling services available at the school, students should take advantage of those services. Another strategy that could help protect mental health is to utilize time management skills to prioritize tasks and organize them into manageable items. Architecture school is much different from high school, and the level of responsibility can a lot to adjust.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In April we are celebrating National Internship Awareness Month. This is the time when students are seeking summer internships in their preferred field of study. Those students who want to pursue architecture will participate in an internship known as the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) which is developed by NCARB, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. NCARB is a national non-profit organization that governs architectural licensing in the United States. The organization creates the exams for registration, verifies the AXP documentation, and certifies architects to assist in the reciprocity of other states. NCARB is a very important organization for architects. Each state may have more restrictive qualifications than NCARB, and you can find out what your state requires by visiting www.ncarb.org. Students can start documenting the 3,740 required hours needed to complete the AXP as soon as they have graduated from high school or the equivalent. The key is to start an NCARB record to officially document the hours of experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The first question most people have is how much should I expect to be paid. According to the US Department of Labor, the minimum wage varies from $8.50 - $16.50 per hour depending on the state. According to the 2021 AIA Salary Calculator, an intern with a professional degree and 0-3 years of experience can expect between $50,000 - $58,000 salary. Depending on the size and type of firm the tasks could range from administrative and marketing to drawing details and assisting on-site visits. It may take a little time before you are able to design but seize every moment as an opportunity to learn hands-on about the business of architecture.</image:caption>

Tashema graduated with an Interior Design degree and realized her passion for art so she went back to Ball State and received a Master in Arts Degree. Tashema is now the owner of Echo Gallery, an art studio in Marion, Indiana. “The ultimate purpose for my art is to be an expression of all things beautiful and meaningful in my life. I believe art transcends the typical and doesn’t always dwell in the realm of just color, line, and form. Art is also composed of higher thought, in the divine commission to help others become better, and to spread peace. I pray that I can help everyone who comes across my work to express themselves, become better, and to love more.” Tashema’s art brought the story to life in a beautiful way that children can experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kionna Louise decided to write this book, which is based on her childhood and daughter, as a way to extend the reach of Next Great Architects. “I fell in love with architecture because it gave me the power to impact people through the spaces I create. When I think back to the first space I designed, I get a little emotional because I did not realize what I was doing at the time. I was just a little girl playing. I used my imagination and created a home for my Barbies on a bookshelf and I saw my home as their world. The kitchen was a restaurant, the living room was a movie theater, and the bathroom was a spa. That same creativity is now used to make life easier and more enjoyable for others.” Kionna told the story through words, but Tashema Davis told the story through illustrations.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEXT GREAT ARCHITECTS BLOG - Mentoring in Architecture - How do you find a mentor?</image:title>
<image:caption>Finding a mentor can seem overwhelming, but it is obtainable with a few tips: Start with your circle. Ask your family, friends, professors, and colleagues if they know of someone who could mentor you. Move to the profession. Research organizations like the American Institute of Architects (AIA), National Organization for Minority Architects (NOMA), or Next Great Architects to see if they have a mentorship program that can connect you to a mentor. Search the internet. Google is a search engine that can help lead you to resources for mentors. Get social. Get involved in the community by attending networking events, conferences, and seminars. Be bold and ask. If you need help crafting the proposal, download the Mentor Request Checklist and Examples for free. Be creative. Some adversities can hinder all the above tips. Sometimes a mentor could be someone that has never met you, and they become your mentor because you study them. Read their books, and follow them on social media. Take notes if you see them speaking. Research them fully. And if you ever get the opportunity, go back to tip 5, and boldly reach out to them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Architect Girl - MEET THE AUTHOR</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello! My name is Kionna Louise Walker. I am the founder of Next Great Architects and a mother to six beautiful children. I was born in Heidelberg, Germany, and moved to the United States when I was in the fourth grade. I grew up in E. St. Louis, IL, and graduated from high school in Belleville, IL. I knew I wanted to be an architect in the eighth grade. I love art and math, and architecture is a beautiful combination of the two subjects. When it came time to go to college, my mom would not let me go further than the neighboring states of Illinois. It was a great compromise since Ball State University was ranked 5th in the nation for top architecture schools at the time. College was tough but with the passion I have, nothing could stop me from reaching my goal. I graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and eventually received a Master of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College. I gained a lot of experience in architecture through employment at architectural firms, but I realized if I wanted to make a mark in architecture, I would have to blaze my own trail. I founded Next Great Architects in 2014. I became the person I needed when I was pursuing architecture. I wrote Jamila Pearl The Architect Girl as an extension of Next Great Architects with the mission of introducing more children to the profession of architecture.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Architect Girl - MEET THE ILLUSTRATOR</image:title>
<image:caption>I am Tashema Nicole Davis, owner of Expressive Expressions by T. Nicole. I am, first of all, a follower of Jesus Christ, an artist, an art teacher, wife, and proud mother to two beautiful girls. I enjoy creating arts of all kinds, but my favorite is creating portraits. My love of drawing portraits started long before I can actually remember. I always wanted to be the creator of a cartoon character and have it develop into a cartoon show… maybe one day down the line. I grew up in the projects of Gary, Indiana, and truly enjoyed my life and my surroundings. I often found myself creating pieces that remind me of home and the times of my childhood. I left Gary in 2000 to attend Ball State University where I received Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. After a few months, I realized that was not my passion, so returned to Ball State for graduate studies. I received my Master’s in art and a license to teach art in 2010. I have been teaching various art courses at Marion High School in Marion, Indiana since 2011 and I absolutely love teaching art! Along with teaching art, I am also the sponsor of the Marion High School art club, sit on the advisory board for the art and writing scholastics of the Fort Wayne museum of art, book illustrator, and do community beautification projects. The ultimate purpose for my art is to be an expression of all things beautiful and meaningful in my life. I believe art transcends the typical and doesn’t always dwell in the realm of just color, line, and form. Art is also composed of higher thought, in the divine commission to help others become better, and to spread peace. I pray that I can help everyone who comes across my work to express themselves, become better, and to love more.</image:caption>
